Composite Fillings
Despite our efforts to keep teeth healthy, cavities are inevitable for most patients. Fortunately, Dr. Dillon and Dr. Harkins offer BPA-free white composite fillings. Bisphenol A (BPA) is an industrial chemical
that has been used in the manufacturing of numerous plastic items for decades and has been linked to various health issues. We do not use any materials such as mixed metals, mercury-based materials or those that contain BPA. Current composite (tooth colored) materials have reached levels of durability and aesthetics that enable Dr. Dillon and Dr. Harkins to restore teeth with the confidence of longevity.
A composite filling is a tooth colored polymer (plastic) and glass mixture that is used to repair or fill teeth that have been harmed by decay. The fillings are placed to rebuild them and to restore their natural function. Most composite materials are shaded to match the specific tooth color, somewhat stain resistant and will protect the tooth from further damage.
Direct restorations to restore decayed teeth usually require a single appointment and sometimes involves the administration of a local anesthetic. In some cases, our Versa Wave Laser can be used to remove
decay and repair teeth with no anesthesia. Using composites also allows Dr. Dillon and Dr. Harkins the ability to replace only the discolored portion of the tooth which leaves healthy tooth structure unharmed.
Composites are also used to improve the shape and color of teeth to improve the cosmetic appearance of the patient’s smile. Cosmetic bonding procedures are artistic additions of composite materials that can enhance the smile by restoring proper length, shape and color of the front teeth without altering the existing enamel. It can sometimes be considered a “common sense” approach to a Smile Makeover that is less invasive and less expensive in some cases. Composites are also a great material to use to fill gaps and spaces in teeth.
